Mae Nan Ellingson interview, 2002, July 12.

Ellingson first describes what brought her to Montana and the University of Montana in 1967. She then describes her experience as an environmental activist (GASP: Gals Against Smog and Pollution) and women's rights activist. She was one of nineteen women elected as representatives in the Montana Constitutional Convention of 1972, as well as the youngest of all the delegates. She discusses how the Convention was organized, some of the initiatives she was involved with (in particular, the Equal Rights Amendment), the anti-partisan atmosphere, and the role of women during that event. She goes on to describe the International Women's Year Conference in Montana, which was transformed because of a high level of participation among Mormon women. Ellingson also discusses the challenges of being a woman in law school (she was one of seven women in her class of 75 students) during the early 1970's and the subsequent difficulties finding a job as a woman. Finally, she elaborates on her views on some contemporary women's issues (such as health care and child care) and her distaste for feminist jargon and labeling.
